What's a Summer Institute?

If you read National Writing Project's website, it will tell you that a summer institute is a space for critical reflection essential to good practice.  Gateway Writing Project's website will tell you that it is an opportunity to grow as a writer and as a teacher of writing.  If you read writing project's websites across the nation, you'll likely see words to describe summer institutes such as:  research, community, and 'best professional development.'

...but what is it really?  Why are most teacher consultants still asking themselves this question even during the first week of the course (lol).  Where does 'the magic' come from?  Why does a summer institute shape and influence our careers so deeply?

In an attempt to understand the value of a summer institute, our GWP 2017 ISI Teacher Consultants plan to continue our learning community through this unique blog experience.  Our group is small but mighty, and we believe our '9Lives' will continue to influence and encourage each other in our professional (and personal) lives.

The plan is:  we've each been assigned a month where we promise to provide an insightful (and likely comical) post about how our inquiry and general experience in the summer institute has appeared in the classroom.  So subscribe!  Join our journey and learn about our learning.
